Its a handshake, a kiss, a hug ...

All it needs is a firm handshake, a gentle kiss, or a simple hug to make all the difference in the world for any person, even for Laura - the so-called heartless 19 year old known among her circle of friends, together with Diana, as the "inbordable" - the person that one can't seem to approach, touch or impress. Out of the group of four friends, Laura and Diana were the ones always looking to enjoy everything without giving anything in return, no kiss, no hug, no matter how handsome the guy was or how cool the party has been. Monica and Amalia have always been at the opposite 'side of the table', they were always the girly girls, somehow in the center of attention because they were the ones that anybody could approach, yes, the complete opposite of the rock-cold brunettes.

The one lazy brunette, Laura, drags herself out of the dorm-bed and into the bathroom. 'Thank God I have a bathroom in the same flat' she seems to think as if her mind is completely empty and she is not looking forward to today. She spends more than ten minutes completely starring in the mirror showing her only from the waist up. The thoughts fly far away, to friends, to high school, to Diana. All her life unveils before her eyes and in between her body and the mirror, without reflecting into it, and she falls into a trance of mixed feelings and memories. Without blinking, she moves the different episodes of her life from right to left as a new application on her computer is able to do, and she stops and stares to a specific one: Diana. Not alone Diana, but with-him-Diana! Normally playing this scene from memory, Laura would have been stuck upon the fact that the blonde fluffy hair of Diana is no longer blond now, but black, just like hers, and on the fact that she was wearing a skirt that night, not trousers as she always had..But no, the image is stick and the whole story is put on repeat over and over again before her eyes and all that Laura is capable of seeing is him, tall, blond, amazingly good looking just like one of those bad-boys-'photoshoped' kind of figures available on the internet meant to allure persons to believe that someone real is actually given the opportunity to look like that.
He is in this picture holding her hand! Out of the whole number of hands available on this Planet, that night, He touched hers, Diana's of all people. She doesn't want to see that Diana took her hand immediately and made a joke of the guys hair, a joke the entire group laughed about. No! she is focused on His smile looking at her and feels numb and empty inside just because she can't even feel jealous about the entire scene.
Yes, that night the guy of her dreams decided to play dirty and make a move on her best friend. Laura decides is time to move on and past this entire issue, "I mean, at the end of the day I was the girlfriend of His best friend" she says out loud. The scene in between her body and the mirror has vanished in an imaginable smoke and she can now see her face. "I will see Him today!"

The two former love-birds have not seen each other since that awkward moment last Spring, when they have intersected their eyes for ten seconds tops. She was riding in a car with him, and He was just pulling over on the right side of the road. They never spoke about what happened back in that cold December day when they split and they never though they will meet again on purpose, at least Laura never did.
- If I don't go out of my mind today, than I will never do! Laura screams into her cellphone.
- Calm down, is heard from the other end. Laura, you are always like this and you have to change for God's sake! He is just a guy, another guy that you broke up with more than a year ago and I don't understand why all this fuss about it. He is not even than good looking...
- See, that's the thing! He is, he is, he has always been the greatest guy I have ever met Diana, and you were never able to understand it. Not even that night when I turned purple seeing you too together...
Silence is now on the line. None of them is speaking, breathing.. but Diana decides to speak, on a high-tone, as always, as if she has to defend her case in front of the Court Martial and she needs to convince the jury from the first tryout, because she knows, with Laura there will not be another chance.
- I told you then and I am telling you now: never saw the guy with those eyes. He is a ridicule for me, a joke with all his moves, talks, money-flaunting acts....yack! a Jerk....she slowly mouths, as you later discover Laura!
- I will see that jerk today, in a few hours actually.
Silence yet again.
"She thinks I am crazy....I know she does"
- Laura you told me yesterday! I know you will meet him. Lets cut the story short: go, see him, talk to him, but don't you dare call me afterwards complaining.
- Done deal, talk to you later.
Laura hung up the phone without listening if Diana was actually saying anything more. She goes towards the closet, chooses the clothes, completely without thinking and gets on the move. No make up, no shinny earrings, nothing. At the end, there is no need to appear different, He knows her way too much to realize that she changed since the last time they've met, without having to impress Him in any way.

Two hours later, she dials a number in front of the subway entrance, The same number she has known by heart for the past five years. It is warm outside and wants to take advantage of the sun, the noise and the people around when she makes this call.
- It is done! she says in a low voice, just like the one criminals use when they finished a job.
- And how does it feel?
- Empty! I liked, loved this guy for four years straight, until today. There is nothing!
- What happened, silly? You kissed?
- Nope, he gave me a hug when we've met. An empty hug, the kind you give to a stranger.
- And you? you hugged back?
- No, my body did not want to! I am done! No more thinking of Him, this hug told me all I ever wanted to know...there was never 'us'.
Pause yet again. Laura feels this time the pause is actually a good thing, she will have to hang up soon anyways because she needs to go home and into the subway.
- I am glad Lauris! I am really glad.
Laura knows that at the sound of her fav nickname, Diana means she actually approves! It has been good to see Him and erase him in the same time.
- Me too! Call you tomorrow? a happy empty voice asks before moving into the metro..
- You can always call me, you know that!
